Implants

A dental implant consists of 3 parts: the Implant, Abutment, and Crown. The implant itself is a small titanium post that is placed into bone in area(s) of missing teeth. Once the implant is placed in the bone it needs to heal. During healing, bone surrounds and attaches to the titanium post recreating a stable structure where a crown will be attached. The abutment is the transition between the implant and the crown. Most abutments are screwed into the implant and provide a surface for the final crown to be cemented on to. Finally, the crown (cap) is the tooth portion of the implant system that will be visible in the mouth.

Dental implants improve quality of life through enhanced…

  • Function – Implants are the closest prosthetic to natural teeth, offering a titanium root for a solid foundation. Additionally, speech is easier and clearer with a full set of teeth. Dental implants can replace single teeth or full dentures.
  • Aesthetics – Implants complete a smile with beautiful restorations that blend seamlessly with your natural teeth. You’ll experience the confidence that comes from a complete smile.
  • Health –With reliable dental implants, you can eat all the foods required in a healthy, balanced diet. Studies show that patients without teeth do not live as long as those with natural or prosthetic teeth.
When a patient suffers from the loss of a tooth or several teeth, the placement of dental implants creates a new smile as strong as nature’s original work.

FAQs

1. What are dental implants?
Dental implants are titanium posts placed in the jawbone to replace missing tooth roots. After healing, an abutment and crown are attached to create a natural looking, fully functional tooth. Implants restore chewing, comfort, and appearance.

2. Who is a good candidate for dental implants?
Most healthy adults with sufficient bone density qualify for implants. If bone loss is present, additional procedures may be required. Dr. Harter will evaluate your oral health, medical history, and X rays to determine the best treatment plan.

3. How long does the implant process take?
Implants typically require several months because the bone must heal and attach to the titanium post. After healing, the abutment and crown are placed. Timelines vary depending on your treatment needs and healing response.

4. Are dental implants painful?
Most patients report minimal discomfort. The placement site is numbed during the procedure, and mild soreness afterward is common for a few days. Implants are generally more comfortable long term than dentures or removable appliances.

5. How do I care for my dental implants?
Implants require the same care as natural teeth: daily brushing and flossing, routine dental cleanings, and avoiding habits like chewing ice. Regular checkups allow Dr. Harter to monitor implant health and ensure long lasting success.
